What are the capacity ratings for transformers?

Transformer capacity is a key parameter indicating the amount of electrical energy a transformer can handle and transmit; it is typically expressed in terms of apparent power, using units such as volt-amperes (VA), kilovolt-amperes (kVA), or-for large transformers-megavolt-amperes (MVA). Capacity depends on factors such as the transformer's windings, core, and heat dissipation capabilities; generally, the higher the capacity, the larger the load the transformer can support.

Transformers can be categorized by capacity into small, medium, and large types. Small-capacity transformers are typically used for electronic devices, control circuits, and small pieces of electrical equipment; medium-capacity transformers are commonly found in buildings, factories, and power distribution systems; and large-capacity transformers are primarily used in power plants, substations, and major power transmission systems. The appropriate transformer capacity is selected based on specific power usage requirements.

A larger capacity is not necessarily better; the capacity must be determined based on actual load conditions. If the selected capacity is too low, the transformer may operate under a heavy load for extended periods, leading to issues such as overheating and increased energy losses, which can-in severe cases-disrupt normal operation. Conversely, if the capacity is excessively high, it will meet load requirements but result in higher equipment costs and increased no-load losses. Therefore, selecting the right capacity requires a comprehensive assessment of factors such as load magnitude, duration of use, and future power demands.

Common capacity specifications range from tens or hundreds of kVA to thousands of kVA and even MVA-level capacities. For instance, residential complexes and standard commercial buildings might utilize distribution transformers ranging from several hundred to over a thousand kVA, whereas the power transformers used in large power plants and substations can reach capacities of tens or even hundreds of MVA. The specific capacity required is determined by the equipment's intended use and the requirements of the power system.
